Mike Ashley buys House of Fraser, NUFC fans upset

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has today bought struggling high street retailer House of Fraser for a reported sum of £90m. The news is likely to cause more consternation among NUFC fans, who are already upset at Ashley for not supporting manager Rafa Benitez in the recently concluded summer transfer window.

Newcastle have sold more than what they’ve bought this summer, and with the likes of Fulham, Wolves and Everton spending heavily, it would seem difficult to expect Benitez to repeat his 10th place finish from last season.

In net transfer terms, Newcastle are the lowest spending Premier League club in the 2018/19 season- approximately minus £28m. They will begin their campaign this weekend against Tottenham Hotspur.

Real Madrid appoint Lopetegui as new manager

Real Madrid have confirmed that Julien Lopetegui will be the club’s new manager. Lopetegui, the current Spanish national team manager, will link up with Los Blancos after La Furia Roja’s 2018 World Cup campaign.

The news of Lopetegui’s appointment comes as a surprise- he had inked a contract extension with the Spanish federation last month and was not among the shortlisted names to be Zinedine Zidane’s successor.

Bolton’s great escape- Wanderers stay in Championship after beating Forest

At 85 minutes, it was looking pretty glum for Bolton Wanderers fans at the Macron Stadium, with the club losing 2-1 to Nottingham Forest and seemingly on the verge of relegation to League One. Hope Akpan’s stunner at Deepdale had put Burton Albion on level terms against Preston, with the Brewers set to stay in the Championship.

Then, in the course of two minutes, it all changed. Bolton somehow found a way to score twice- first through David Wheater, and then through Aaron Wilbraham, who had copped a fair bit of flak from the fans but ended up scoring what will go down as one of the most important goals in the history of the club.

Bolton were safe- we’ll now have Preston, Bolton, Blackburn and Wigan in the SAME league next season, and brave Burton were relegated to the third tier.
