Iceland booked themselves a Round of 16 tie against England by beating Austria in their final group game- a fantastic achievement for a country’s whose population is just over 0.3 million. About 10% of their country is at the Championships supporting their team.

The group stages of Euro 2016 are done, and we now have sixteen teams that have qualified for the Round of 16- the top two finishers from each of the six groups and the four best third placed teams.

We started with 24 teams, and so here are the eight teams that missed out. Out of these eight, Ukraine were THE only team not to register a single point. Romania have been knocked out of Euro 2016 after losing 1-0 to Albania at Parc Olympique Lyonnais. The Romanians had a single point from their opening two games against France and Switzerland, and three points against Albania would’ve almost certainly guaranteed them a spot in the last 16 as one of the best fourth placed teams.

Instead the Shqiperi made history thanks to Sadiku’s goal and consigned Romania to last spot in their group, making the latter the second team to be officially eliminated from the Championships after Ukraine.
